Furze the Cruel

Dartmoor's ancient, windswept wildness devours anyone who tries to live on it. Furze the Cruel captures a world where God is indifferent, nature is merciless, and poverty grinds human life down to bare survival. When it first appeared in 1907, critics called it "a great book - almost a masterpiece" and predicted it would rank among the finest of modern fiction. Then it vanished for nearly a century. This is that lost masterpiece, now restored. At its heart are the Tavy siblings, eking out a rustic existence on the moor, and Brightly, a rabbit-skin collector whose hunger and humiliation expose the brutal economics of rural poverty. Trevena weaves folklore and witchcraft into the landscape itself, creating a Dartmoor that feels less like a setting and more like a living, hostile force. The novel moves between tragedy and dark comedy with unsettling ease, its prose thick with the voices of a world that modernity was already erasing. This is Edwardian England at its rawest: not the genteel picture post card, but the moors where people actually lived, suffered, and sometimes laughed anyway.
