Freezing a Mother-In-Law; Or, Suspended Animation: A Farce in One Act

What if you could put your meddling mother-in-law on ice until she agreed to your marriage? That's the deliciously absurd premise at the heart of this 1889 farce, where love, stubbornness, and a dubious scientific invention collide in a London drawing room. Young Emily Watmuff loves Walter Litterland, but her formidable mother stands firmly against the union. Enter Ferdinand Swift, nephew to the formidable Mrs. Watmuff, with his experimental device for suspended animation and a cheeky proposal: why not test it on dear auntie until she comes around? The play whirls through mistaken identities, secret plans, and the hilarious spectacle of a matriarch who discovers she's about to become a human science experiment. Pemberton skewers Victorian family politics with sharp wit and genuine comic energy, using the era's fascination with scientific novelty to poke fun at the tyranny of parental approval. It's a gleeful reminder that sometimes love requires creativeProblem-solving, and that some mothers-in-law have been difficult since long before the term existed.
