Ellen Terry and Her Sisters

The greatest English actress of her generation comes alive in this intimate 1902 portrait. Ellen Terry, whose name could fill theaters across London and New York, is revealed here not as the legendary Dame but as the girl who first stepped onto the stage alongside her sisters, driven by a passion that would define an era. Pemberton traces Terry's journey from her childhood in the provinces to her triumphant Shakespearean performances that made her the companion of Henry Irving and the idol of generations. Yet this is equally the story of her sisters: Kate, Marion, and the others who shared the boards and the burden of a life in the theater. Together, they navigated a profession that demanded everything from women who dared to perform. Published while Terry still reigned at the Lyceum, this volume captures Victorian theater at its zenith, complete with twenty-five illustrations that bring the period to vivid life. It offers an invaluable window into a world of gaslight, packed galleries, and the extraordinary women who commanded them.
