Four Max Carrados Detective Stories

The year is 1914, and detective fiction has a new kind of hero. Max Carrados, a wealthy London gentleman with the keenest observational skills in the city, happens to be blind. In these four compact puzzles, Bramah reimagines what a detective can be: Carrados compensates for his lack of sight with extraordinary hearing, touch, and intuition, solving cases that stump Scotland Yard. The stories involving a counterfeit coin, a railway signal mystery, a countryside tragedy, and a theatrical con man are elegantly constructed period pieces designed to reward careful attention. The novelty here is not mere gimmick. Bramah, a contemporary of Conan Doyle, uses Carrados's disability as a genuine narrative engine, not a limitation to overcome. The detective's world is rendered with surprising vividness, his methods logical and satisfying. This is detective fiction as intellectual entertainment, meant to be solved alongside the detective rather than simply witnessed. For readers who enjoy early mystery fiction, clever puzzles, or stories that subvert expectations, this collection offers a unique proposition: a protagonist who sees differently, and therefore sees what others miss.
