Estafeta Romántica
Estafeta Romántica is the sixth installment in the third series of Galdós's monumental Episodios Nacionales, the sweeping epic chronicling Spain's turbulent nineteenth century. Written as a correspondence between the Marquesa de Sariñán, the spirited Doña María Tirgo, the restless Fernando Calpena, D. José María de Navarridas, and the sharp-tongued D. Pedro Hillo, the novel unfolds entirely through letters. These epístolas reveal not merely the romantic entanglements and social machinations of Spain's elite, but also serve as Galdós's sly vehicle for critiquing the literary culture of the age, including the work of poets like Larra and the lingering shadows of Romanticism. The title itself puns on 'estafeta' (courier/mail) and suggests both the romantic and the epistolary nature of the work. What emerges is a mischievous meditation on how we perform ourselves through correspondence, how love and literature intertwine, and how a nation writes itself into modernity.
