Essays Before a Sonata

Charles Ives wrote these essays to be heard alongside his piano sonata "Concord, Mass., 1845", not as background music, but as companion to a radically American vision. He wanted you to understand his compositions as conversations with dead philosophers: Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau. What would their ideas sound like if translated into harmonic structures? Ives explores that impossible translation with the intensity of a man trying to capture the uncapturable. The essays question what American art might actually sound like, whether music can articulate philosophy, and how a composer honors ideas that exist beyond notes. Written in the early 1920s, when Ives was largely ignored by the musical establishment, these pieces radiate fierce conviction: that art must wrestle with the transcendental, the spiritual, the unnameable. Part program notes, part philosophical inquiry, part spiritual confession. This is Ives inviting you into the mind that produced some of America's most innovative music, and asking you to hear what he heard in the souls of thinkers who shaped a nation.
