Elsie's Young Folks in Peace and War

Summer, 1900. A yacht named the Dolphin cuts through the cool Atlantic waters off the Maine coast, carrying Elsie Raymond and her brother Ned toward a living history lesson. Their grandmother accompanies them, and as the yacht anchors near harbors and headlands thick with memory, the young travelers hear the echo of revolutionary muskets and War of 1812 cannons. This is no dry textbook: the past comes alive through grandmother's stories, through the salt wind and the creak of rigging, through the excitement of standing where soldiers once stood. Finley weaves geography, genealogy, and national pride into a sailing adventure that treats history as treasure waiting to be discovered. The children ask questions modern readers will recognize: who were these people, what did they risk, why does any of it matter now? The answer arrives not as lecture but as experience. For readers who cherish the romance of the past, who find magic in old boats and older stories, this is a portal to an America that still believed its founders walked beside it.
