Elegies and Other Small Poems

Matilda Betham wrote at the threshold of the Romantic era, and these verses reveal a voice both ancient in its sorrows and startlingly modern in its intimacy. The collection pairs elegies of genuine mourning with smaller lyrics that capture nature's fleeting beauty, the ache of lovesick hearts, and the particular guilt that blooms from family bonds broken. Poems like 'Arthur and Albina' and 'The Fraternal Duel' operate in that twilight space between Gothic romance and genuine grief, where love kills and remorse outlives the dead. Betham writes with a sensitivity that feels ahead of her time: she is not performing emotion but inhabiting it. These are not grand declarations but small, precise observations about how happiness slips away and how we carry the weight of what we've done to those closest to us. For readers curious about the women writers who paved the way for the Romantics, or for anyone who finds solace in quiet, melancholic verse, this collection offers an hour's worth of companionship in loneliness.
