David Blaize

David Blaize traces the schooldays of a mischievous boy in the years before the Great War, following him from the corridors of Helmsworth Preparatory School through to public school and the brink of adulthood. Benson writes with affectionate humor about the small rebellions, ancient hierarchies, and tender friendships that define boyhood: the inky darts flung across classrooms, the dread of summons to the headmaster's study, the elaborate codes of loyalty among classmates. David's world is one where a failed Latin translation feels like catastrophe and a forbidden adventure carries the weight of legend. The narrative builds toward a dramatic moment of unexpected heroism when the young man stops a runaway horse, nearly sacrificing his life. What makes the book endure is its precise, loving reconstruction of what it means to be young in a world governed by incomprehensible rules, where every small victory and defeat feels absolute. It captures the particular ache of being caught between childhood and adulthood, belonging fully to neither.
