Cressy

Bret Harte turns his legendary eye for California frontier life onto the unlikeliest of battlegrounds: a one-room schoolhouse in Tuolumne County. The young schoolmaster Jack Ford, all of twenty years old and desperately affecting the severe demeanor of his profession, prepares to face a mob of rural pupils whose chaotic energy threatens his authority at every turn. But his greatest challenge arrives in the form of Cressy McKinstry, a sixteen-year-old girl who has returned to school after a broken engagement, carrying her 'newfound freedom' like a banner that sets the entire school buzzing with curiosity and gossip. Harte's genius for social comedy finds perfect fodder in this cast of rough-hewn frontier children, their battered hymnals, and the schoolhouse walls still bearing faded traces of political rally posters. The lingering tension around Cressy's past with Seth Davis threads through the whimsical classroom disruptions, giving the story its emotional undercurrent beneath the humor. This is Harte at his most gentle: not the tragic poet of the gold rush camps, but a wry observer of small-town American life, finding both comedy and pathos in the universal struggles of youth, authority, and the complicated business of growing up.
