Confessio Amantis; Or, Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins

One of the great neglected masterpieces of English literature, written by Chaucer's contemporary in the dying years of the 14th century. John Gower's massive poem structures itself as a confessional: Amans, a man undone by failed love, kneels before the poet-as-confessor and recounts his sins through the lens of the seven deadly sins. But this is no mere moral treatise. Gower is a master storyteller, and each sin becomes a gateway to dazzling tales drawn from Ovid, medieval legend, and courtly romance. Venus herself appears to Amans in a crucial scene, demanding he examine whether his desire truly constitutes love or merely selfish lust. The result is a fascinating hybrid of erotic poetry, allegorical drama, and philosophical inquiry into what it means to love well. Gower writes in English, a deliberate choice that places him alongside Chaucer in founding a vernacular literary tradition. For readers drawn to the roots of English literature, the medieval imagination at its most luminous, or stories nested within stories like nesting dolls, this remains astonishingly alive.
