Clásicos Castellanos: Libro De Buen Amor

Written by a 14th-century Spanish priest who clearly understood that heaven and hell both run on the same fuel, the Libro de Buen Amor is a wildly inventive, frequently hilarious account of one man's battle with desire. Juan Ruiz, the Archpriest of Hita, packs his autobiography with lyric poems, fabliaux, religious allegories, and sheer nonsense, creating something no medieval reader had quite seen before. The narrator yearns for every woman in sight, composes elaborate excuses for his failures with the ladies, pleads with God for help he clearly doesn't deserve, and somehow wraps all of it in an earnest meditation on what love actually means. Is it divine tenderness or base appetite? He refuses to choose, and that's the point. The book mocks clerical hypocrisy while remaining genuinely pious, celebrates worldly desire while acknowledging its spiritual costs. Eight centuries later, its voice still burns with irreverent life. This is medieval literature that feels less like a monument and more like a letter from a friend who won't stop making excuses.
