Charlie to the Rescue
1890
From his first act of courage, a small boy leaping into a wash-tub to smother flames on his own clothing, Charlie Brooke discovers what he was born to do: rescue. R. M. Ballantyne's rousing 1890 adventure follows young Charlie from childhood through adolescence as he repeatedly answers the call of danger, whether saving a kitten from a river or facing down the greater perils that await a growing boy. His steadfast friend Shank Leather stands beside him through these trials, but it is Charlie's irrepressible instinct to help that defines him, even when others might look away. The novel traces the formation of character through action: not through lectures or moralizing, but through the lived experience of a boy who cannot walk past suffering without intervening. For modern readers, Charlie to the Rescue offers something increasingly rare: an unironic celebration of goodness as exciting, of bravery as something to be cultivated rather than questioned. Ballantyne writes with the breathless energy of a boy telling his own story, and the result endures because its core truth remains intact. Some people are simply built to help.
