Castle Rackrent
Castle Rackrent, published in 1800 by Maria Edgeworth, is recognized as the first true historical novel in English and the first Big-House novel. Set in 1780s Ireland, it is narrated by Honest Thady, the steward of the Rackrent family, who chronicles the mismanagement of their estate by a series of inept Anglo-Irish landlords. The novel satirizes the socio-political issues surrounding the Act of Union and includes extensive footnotes and a glossary to address concerns from the Edgeworth family. This 1895 edition features an introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie.
