Betty Wales, B. A.: A Story for Girls

The cap and gown are barely packed away when Betty Wales finds herself at a threshold. Returning to her family's home after four years at Harding College, she discovers that graduation is not an ending but a door swinging open. Her circle of devoted friends, the inseparable Merry Hearts, buzz with excitement over an upcoming wedding and schemes for European adventure. Betty's buoyant personality animates every page as she juggles letters of congratulations, plans to stand beside her friend at the altar, and the delicious uncertainty of what comes next. Set in an era when young women were just beginning to imagine lives beyond the parlor, this story captures a specific kind of freedom: the giddy freedom of finished examinations and untethered futures. Dunton writes with affectionate humor about the small dramas of young friendship, the flutter of wedding preparations, and the bittersweet knowledge that nothing will ever be quite the same as these last days before the world demands everything different. For readers who cherish stories about women figuring out who they're becoming, Betty Wales offers both period charm and timeless emotional resonance.
