Beasley's Christmas Party
1909
Beasley's Christmas Party, written by Booth Tarkington and first published in 1909, is a Christmas-themed narrative set in early 20th-century America. The story follows a newcomer to Wainwright who becomes intrigued by the eccentric local figure, Mr. David Beasley, and the peculiar happenings at his home. Through themes of loneliness, community, and friendship, Tarkington crafts a tale that combines humor with poignant moments, particularly through the relationship between Beasley and a sickly child named Hamilton Swift. The narrative reflects the cultural nuances of its time while promoting kindness and connection amidst the holiday spirit.

“I always thought that explained it: the romance is a reaction from the algebra. I never knew a person connected with mathematics or astronomy or statistics, or any of those exact things, who didn't have a crazy streak in 'em SOMEwhere.””

“The maple-bordered street was as still as a country Sunday; so quiet that there seemed an echo to my footsteps. It was four o'clock in the morning; clear October moonlight misted through the thinning foliage to the shadowy sidewalk and lay like a transparent silver fog upon the house of my admiration, as I strode along, returning from my first night's work on the "Wainwright Morning Despatch.””
— Booth Tarkington
