Bars and Shadows: The Prison Poems of Ralph Chaplin
1922
These are not polite meditations on confinement. They are poems written in rage and longing by a man locked in a federal penitentiary for the crime of holding beliefs the state deemed dangerous. Ralph Chaplin, I.W.W. organizer and editor of the radical paper Solidarity, received a twenty-year sentence not for any act of violence, but for the expression of his opinions during the First World War. The poems in Bars and Shadows capture what it means to be caged for dissent: the hollow echo of "Night in the Cell House," the defiant blast of "Prison Reveille," the aching "Song of Separation" from a wife and child waiting beyond walls. Yet Chaplin's vision extends beyond his own cell. He mourns fellow prisoners, critiques the economic machinery that grinds workers into poverty, and pays tribute to labor activists like Wesley Everest, killed in the Centralia Massacre. The natural world bleeds through prison bars in "Seven Little Sparrows" and "The Warrior Wind," reminders that even in confinement, the world breathes. These poems endure because they capture something universal: the stubborn refusal to let the spirit be imprisoned alongside the body. They speak to anyone who has ever been told their voice is too dangerous to be heard.

“Mourn not the dead that in the cool earth lie--Dust unto dust--The calm, sweet earth that mothers all who dieAs all men must;Mourn not your captive comrades who must dwell--Too strong to strive--Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell,Buried alive; But rather mourn the apathetic throng--The cowed and the meek--Who see the world's great anguish and its wrongAnd dare not speak!””
