Aunt Jane's Nieces on Vacation
1912
When three independent young women arrive at their uncle's upstate New York retreat for the summer, they find the quiet life insufferable. Bored with tea parties and idle days, they devise an audacious plan: to launch their own newspaper, the Millville Daily Tribune, injecting life into a sleepy town and giving voice to its forgotten citizens. But the girls soon discover that Millville harbors darker secrets, the greedy mill owners are scheming to swindle the town, exploiting immigrant workers whom the locals dismiss as beneath notice. As Beth, Patsy, and Louise navigate the chaos of publishing a daily paper (with help from stereotype plates and plenty of local gossip), they also uncover the human stories behind the town's prejudices. L. Frank Baum, writing as Edith Van Dyne, delivers a surprisingly progressive tale about the power of the press, the dignity of labor, and three women who refuse to stay on the sidelines. The result is a lively adventure that proves journalism can be a weapon for justice, and that summer vacations are far more interesting when you shake things up.

“We hear considerable of the "conventional people" of this world, but seldom do we meet with them, for as soon as we begin to know a person we discover peculiarities that quite remove him from the ranks of the convectional if such ranks exist at all.””
— L. Frank Baum
