Aunt Jane's Nieces on the Ranch
Aunt Jane's Nieces on the Ranch
L. Frank Baum, creator of Oz, ventures into surprising territory with this 1913 novel about family, race, and the secrets we keep. When progressive-minded Arthur and Louise Weldon hire a Mexican governess named Inez to care for their infant daughter, Baby Jane, Louise's wealthy uncle John Merrick is less than pleased. He responds by bringing in Mildred Travers, an American nurse from New York, creating a charged domestic situation where cultural expectations clash with modern attitudes. The ranch itself becomes a character, an old Spanish land grant property rumored to be haunted, its walls hiding mysterious secret passages that only a few know exist. As tensions simmer between the two nannies and the family navigates shifting social dynamics, Baum weaves a narrative that is part family drama, part atmospheric mystery. The book endures because it captures a pivotal moment in American cultural attitudes while embedding them in an entertaining story of domestic intrigue.
