Anthony Lyveden

Major Anthony Lyveden stands on a London street, a war veteran adrift in a peace that offers him no quarter. Broke, unemployed, and haunted by what he's seen, he faces the cruel mathematics of post-war survival: every door closes, every shillings counts, and the only creature who never judges him is Patch, his devoted little dog. When Anthony makes the agonizing choice to part with his companion for the dog's own good, he sets in motion a chain of events that will test his resolve and reclaim his sense of purpose. Written in 1921 as Dornford Yates's first novel, this is a story of ordinary men broken by extraordinary times, fighting to rebuild themselves from the wreckage. The prose carries the wistful elegance of the interwar years, balancing quiet desperation with flashes of warmth and humor. For readers who cherish early 20th-century adventure and character-driven fiction, Anthony Lyveden offers an unsentimental yet moving portrait of resilience.
