American Notes
1891
In 1891, a young Rudyard Kipling crossed the Atlantic and found himself utterly disoriented in a nation that spoke his language but belonged to a different world. American Notes captures his bemused, frequently irritated, occasionally awed passage through San Francisco, New York, and the spaces between. He arrives in San Francisco bewildered by the city's frantic energy and the peculiar customs of its inhabitants, then proceeds eastward with the weary patience of a man perpetually confounded by American hospitality, American slang, and American assumptions about how a British writer should be received. The prose crackles with his frustration and fascination in equal measure. This is Kipling before the empire nostalgia hardened into sentimentality a writer still sharp enough to see that his own homeland might be just as strange to outsiders as America was to him. For readers who relish travel writing at its most waspish and perceptive, this is a window onto a vanished America observed by one of the language's most incisive stylists.
