American Fairy Tales
1901
What happens when fairy tales abandon the castle and move to Chicago? L. Frank Baum asked exactly that in this charming collection, published the year after The Wonderful Wizard of Oz made him famous. Here, magic doesn't require a yellow brick road. It simply needs an ordinary American home, a curious child, and a trunk that shouldn't contain bandits (but does, along with a pie). These twelve stories take place in recognizable American towns, where modern fairies, knooks, and ryls meddle in the lives of senators, farmers, cowboys, and department store dummies. A brave young cowgirl lassoes Father Time himself. A tiny beetle grants a New England farmer a pump that produces gold instead of water. Five magical bon-bons turn a boring senator into something extraordinary. Baum's America is a place where the mundane becomes magical and mischief is always close at hand. For readers who've wondered what Dorothy's creator could do beyond Oz, this collection offers a playful answer. It's Baum unbound, applying his irrepressible imagination to the everyday landscapes of early twentieth-century America.
