Alchemist
The Alchemist, written by Ben Jonson in 1610, is a satirical play set during a plague outbreak in London. The story follows Lovewit, who leaves his home in the care of his butler Jeremy, who seizes the opportunity to run a con operation with the help of Subtle and Dol Common. Jonson critiques human folly, particularly the greed and gullibility of society, as the trio of con-artists exploit their victims' desires for wealth and youth, ultimately leading to their own downfall. The play is notable for its sharp wit and commentary on social class and human vice.
