Afterwhiles

James Whitcomb Riley, the beloved "Hoosier Poet," captured something timeless in these pages: the particular ache of looking back. Written in 1895, Afterwhiles gathers poems that move between remembrance and longing, between the simple pleasures of rural Indiana and the bittersweet knowledge that those pleasures have already passed. Riley writes with a conversational warmth that makes his sentiment feel earned rather than imposed, his lines flowing as naturally as speech. Here you'll find poems about childhood summers, about lost loves, about the peace of sitting in a kitchen while rain falls outside. The title itself becomes a kind of promise, that after the struggles of now, there will be afterwhiles of rest, of reconciliation, of returning to what matters. This is not poetry for the ambitious or the ironical. It is for readers who understand that sometimes the deepest truths live in quiet places, in the spaces between what was and what will be.
