Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton
Charles Augustus Milverton is the worst man in London, and he carries no weapon but a letter opener. A master blackmailer with hundreds of victims bleeding quietly into his coffers, he has constructed an empire of secrets and shame. When Lady Eva Blackwell discovers hercompromising letters in his safe, she turns to Sherlock Holmes. But Milverton knows Holmes by reputation and has prepared for every contingency. To catch this man, Holmes must become something he despises: a burglar in the night, a violator of locks and laws. The case forces Holmes to host the monster in his own parlor, to smile and offer tea while calculating how to destroy him. What unfolds is a grim game of patience and prying, where the line between justice and vengeance blurs until neither Holmes nor the reader can tell them apart. This is Doyle at his darkest, asking what happens when the law cannot touch evil but a clever man might.
