A Memoir of Miss Hannah Adams

Hannah Adams was among the first American women to earn her living by the pen, and this memoir, completed shortly before her death in 1832, stands as an unvarnished record of what that achievement cost. Written with startling candor about her frail constitution, chronic financial precarity, and the social indifference toward women's minds, Adams does not sentimentalize her struggles. She traces her intellectual awakening through her father's forbidden books, the shaping loss of her mother at twelve, and the deep partnership with her sister Bethia, who became her editor and lifeline. The memoir captures Adams' fierce determination to claim space in a world that insisted women had none. These pages offer a rare, intimate portrait of early American literary culture from inside a woman's experience, where every publication was a battle and survival itself was a form of resistance.
