A Forest Hearth: A Romance of Indiana in the Thirties

In 1830s Indiana, young Rita Bays navigates the suffocating grip of her mother's relentless righteousness. Mrs. Margarita Bays rules her family from the bench of her own moral certainty, earning the wry nickname "Chief Justice" from those who know her. Her gentle husband and sweet-natured daughter bear the weight of her unforgiving virtues, while Rita's emerging feelings for the local boy Diccon Bright offer the first hint of a life beyond her mother's shadow. Charles Major crafts this frontier coming-of-age story with surprising wit and philosophical bite. The novel dissects the damage inflicted by rigid justice deployed as a weapon of control, asking whether righteousness without mercy truly constitutes goodness. Through Rita's innocent eyes, we see the pioneers' hardships and the quiet heroism required to build a life in the wilderness, but it's the domestic terrain that proves most treacherous. For readers who savor historical fiction with psychological depth, this is a portrait of early American life where the real frontier is emotional, and the true pioneer work is learning to forgive.
