A Beautiful Alien

A woman crosses the Atlantic newly married, and already she is drowning. Christine Dallas boards a ship with a husband who regards her as decorum rather than companion, his emotional distance vast as the ocean beneath them. When the artist Albert Noel notices her on deck, he sees what her spouse cannot or will not: a profound sadness radiating from someone beautiful and utterly alone. Magruder's novel, written in the late nineteenth century, maps the territory of a woman caught between languages, between expectations, between who she is and who her marriage demands she become. The language barrier becomes less about words and more about the impossible task of making oneself understood to someone who has never tried to listen. As Noel contemplates painting her portrait, the novel quietly asks whether art can preserve what a marriage refuses to nurture. This is a story about the loneliness of foreignness, and how sometimes the cruelest exile is the one we marry into.
