The Princess Sonia

Paris, 1880s. Martha Keene, a young American artist, has come to study at a prestigious atelier seeking to escape the constraints of her provincial upbringing. There she encounters Princess Sonia, a Russian noblewoman who has also defied convention to pursue painting. What begins as artistic admiration curdles into something more consuming: a longing that transcends friendship yet cannot speak its own name. Magruder writes with striking psychological precision about the ache of wanting what society forbids, the torture of admiration that runs deeper than rivalry, and the particular loneliness of women who dare to create outside the margins. The novel traces Martha's escalating fixation with the aristocratic Sonia against the vivid backdrop of Parisian artistic circles, where talent and title collide. It is a period piece that feels surprisingly modern in its exploration of desire, identity, and the invisible cages women build for themselves. For readers who cherish the quiet devastations of Victorian literary fiction, the forbidden friendships of Sarah Waters, or the artistic longing of Portrait of a Lady.
