William Greener

William Greener was an innovative English inventor and gunmaker, known for his pioneering contributions to firearms and safety devices in the 19th century. Born in Felling, County Durham, he made significant advancements in weaponry, most notably developing a self-expanding bullet in 1835 that featured a hollow base designed to expand upon firing, enhancing accuracy and velocity. Although his design proved effective, it was ultimately deemed too complex for mass production, leading to the adoption of similar concepts in later inventions, such as the Minié ball. Greener's inventive spirit extended beyond firearms; he also created an electric lamp in 1846, well before Thomas Edison’s famous patent, and improved the miner's safety lamp, showcasing his versatility as an inventor. His work garnered recognition at the Great Exhibition of 1851, where he was awarded a gold medal for his self-righting lifeboat and various percussion muzzle-loading firearms. Greener's inventions not only reflected the technological advancements of his time but also contributed to the safety and efficiency of various industries.
