William C. Tetley was a distinguished Canadian lawyer, professor, and politician whose contributions spanned legal education and public service. He began his career after graduating from McGill University and obtaining his law degree from Université Laval, subsequently being admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1952. Tetley practiced law for 18 years, becoming a partner in a prominent Montreal firm while also making his mark as a literary critic for the Montreal Star and the Montreal Gazette. His commitment to community service was evident in his active involvement with the Boy Scouts of Canada and the YMCA in Montreal. Tetley's political career began in municipal politics, where he was elected as a councillor in Mount Royal, Quebec, before moving on to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. As a member of the Liberal Party, he was appointed Minister of Revenue and later held the position of Minister of Financial Institutions, Companies, Cooperatives and Consumer Protection, where he was instrumental in enacting Quebec's first consumer protection act. After retiring from politics in 1976, Tetley dedicated himself to academia as a professor at McGill University's Faculty of Law, where he influenced a generation of law students and contributed significantly to the fields of maritime and commercial law, both in Canada and internationally through his visiting professorship at Tulane University. Tetley's legacy lies in his multifaceted career that blended legal expertise, public service, and a passion for education.
