Blanco Y Colorado: Old Days Among the Gauchos of Uruguay

In 1906, a young Englishman named William C. Tetley set out from Montevideo on a bone-shaking diligence journey into the Uruguayan interior, bound for a friend's estancia. What he found there and along the road became this vivid memoir: a frontier world in the last moments before modernity swept it away. Uruguay was in the grip of civil war between the Blancos and Colorados, and Tetley witnessed a society suspended between old and new, where gauchos still lived as their fathers had, riding endless plains, upholding codes of honor now crumbling under the weight of revolution. He records the landscape in precise, gorgeous detail, the characters he encounters, and the peculiar tension of traveling through a country at war. The book captures something that history books cannot: the texture of daily life in a vanished Uruguay, the romance and hardship of the estancias, the feel of a culture in transition. Tetley writes with warmth and wit about his friend Royd and the gauchos who become his companions, painting an affectionate portrait of people and a place that have largely disappeared.
