Wilhelm Kobelt was a prominent German zoologist renowned for his contributions to malacology, the study of mollusks. Born in Alsfeld, Grand Duchy of Hesse, he pursued medical studies at Gießen, earning his doctorate in 1862. His career began as a physician in Biedenkopf, where he established a natural history society, reflecting his early passion for the natural sciences. In 1869, he moved to Schwanheim near Frankfurt am Main, where his interest in mollusks flourished, particularly through his collaboration with fellow naturalist Emil Adolf Rossmäßler in Leipzig. Kobelt's dedication to malacology led him to significant roles, including curator of the mollusc section at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. He was instrumental in founding a journal dedicated to the field, furthering research and knowledge on mollusks. His legacy includes several species named in his honor, such as Fusinus kobelti and Cymatium kobelti, as well as the subgenus Kobeltia, which reflects his lasting impact on the study of mollusks. Kobelt's work not only advanced scientific understanding of these creatures but also established a foundation for future research in malacology, solidifying his place in the history of zoology.
