Pierre Gilles

Pierre Gilles

Pierre Gilles, also known as Petrus Gyllius, was a prominent French natural scientist, topographer, and translator born in Albi, southern France. His extensive travels across the Mediterranean and the Orient greatly informed his scholarly work. Among his notable contributions are 'De Topographia Constantinopoleos et de illius antiquitatibus libri IV,' which provided a detailed account of Constantinople's geography and antiquities, and 'De Bosphoro Thracio libri III,' where he delivered the first written description of the Bosphorus in Latin. Gilles also authored a treatise on Mediterranean fish, showcasing his diverse interests in natural history and geography. In 1544, Gilles was commissioned by King Francis I to travel to Constantinople in search of ancient manuscripts. This expedition led to the discovery of a manuscript of Dionysius of Byzantium's geographical work, which he later paraphrased in Latin. His scholarly influence continued posthumously, as many of his works were published by his nephew after his death in 1555, including a translation of Claudius Aelianus completed in 1533. Gilles's contributions to the fields of topography and natural science, along with his role in the preservation of classical texts, solidified his legacy as a key figure in Renaissance scholarship.

Vite.Très vite !(p. 6)””
