Mrs. Rowson

Susanna Rowson, née Haswell, was a British-American novelist, poet, playwright, and educator who made significant contributions to literature and social issues in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She is best known for her groundbreaking novel, Charlotte Temple, published in 1791, which became the first best-seller in American literature, holding that title until Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin appeared in the 1850s.
