Question 1

What's the best Horace Holden book to start with?

Accepted Answer

For most readers, A Narrative of the Shipwreck, Captivity and Sufferings of Horace Holden and Benj. H. Nutewho Were Cast Away in the American Ship Mentor, on the Pelew Islands, in the Year 1832; And for Two Years Afterwards Were Subjected to Unheard of Sufferings Among the Barbarous Inhabitants of Lord North's Island is the most popular Horace Holden title on Lex. It's available free as both an ebook and a downloadable EPUB, so you can sample it before committing to a longer work.

Question 2

How is Lex different from Project Gutenberg for reading Horace Holden?

Accepted Answer

Lex sources public domain books from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, and the Internet Archive, but adds a modern reader (custom fonts, themes, highlights, bookmarks, dark mode), human-narrated audiobooks for the major works, native iOS and Android apps, and reading progress sync across devices. Project Gutenberg provides the raw EPUB files; Lex turns them into a reading experience.

Question 3

Is Lex free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Lex is free to use for all public domain books and audiobooks, including every Horace Holden title. No signup is required to read or listen. A premium tier exists for AI features and exclusive originals, but the entire public domain catalog is free forever.
