Helen Barrett Montgomery was an influential American social reformer, educator, and writer who made significant contributions to women's rights and religious leadership in the early 20th century. As the first woman president of the Northern Baptist Convention, she broke barriers in a predominantly male-dominated religious landscape. Montgomery's activism began early in her career; she co-founded the Women's Educational and Industrial Union in Rochester, New York, in 1893 and served as its president for nearly two decades. Her commitment to education and women's missions led her to raise substantial funds for women's colleges in China, showcasing her dedication to global education and empowerment. In addition to her advocacy work, Montgomery was a pioneer in biblical scholarship, becoming the first woman to publish a translation of the New Testament from the original Greek in 1924. Her efforts not only advanced the role of women in religious contexts but also inspired future generations of female leaders in both church and society. Montgomery's legacy continues to be honored today, with the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School hosting an annual conference in her name, reflecting her lasting impact on the intersection of gender and faith in America.
