David Castelli

David Castelli was an influential Italian scholar and educator known for his contributions to secular Jewish studies. Born in Leghorn, Tuscany, he received his education at the local rabbinical college, which laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to Jewish education. Between 1857 and 1863, Castelli taught Hebrew and Italian in the Jewish schools of Leghorn, where he began to shape the minds of a new generation. His career progressed as he became the secretary of the Jewish congregation in Pisa while also serving as a private teacher, further solidifying his commitment to Jewish scholarship and education. In 1876, Castelli took on a prominent role at the Istituto di Studi Superiori Pratici e di Perfezionamento in Florence, where he held the chair of Hebrew until his death in 1901. His work was significant in promoting secular Jewish studies during a time when such subjects were often overlooked. Castelli's legacy endures through his efforts to integrate Jewish culture and language into broader educational contexts, making him a pivotal figure in the advancement of Jewish scholarship in Italy.
