Charles Albany Marjoribanks was a Scottish Liberal politician known for his brief yet impactful career in the House of Commons. Born into a prominent family, he was the son of Sir John Marjoribanks, a baronet and Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Marjoribanks initially worked for the East India Company in Macao before returning to Scotland, where he became a freeman of Edinburgh at the age of 30. His political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Berwickshire in the 1832 general election, a pivotal moment in his life that allowed him to advocate for significant reforms, including the Reform Bill that expanded voting rights in Britain. Despite his untimely death in 1833 at the age of 39, Marjoribanks left a lasting legacy. He is commemorated by the Marjoribanks monument in Coldstream, which highlights his talents and political principles. The monument, constructed shortly after his death, reflects the esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries. Although the original statue was destroyed by lightning, a replacement was commissioned, ensuring that his contributions to Scottish politics and society would not be forgotten. Marjoribanks's commitment to liberal ideals and electoral reform marks him as a significant figure in the early 19th-century political landscape of Scotland.
