Augustin Filon

Pierre Marie Augustin Filon was a prominent French professor of rhetoric and a versatile author whose works spanned fiction, political commentary, and literary criticism. Born in Paris to a family steeped in historical scholarship, he received his education at the prestigious École normale. Filon began his career as a lecturer in the Lycées of Nice and Grenoble before being appointed as a tutor to the Prince Imperial in 1867. His role expanded during the Empress's Regency, where he served as her private secretary. Following the fall of the Second French Empire, Filon accompanied the exiled Prince Imperial to England, where he settled with his family and continued his literary pursuits. Filon was not only a prolific writer but also an insightful commentator on contemporary English politics and culture, often publishing under the pseudonym Pierre Sandrié. His notable works include a variety of articles, reviews, and fiction that reflect his deep engagement with the socio-political landscape of his time. He also contributed prefaces to the works of his sister, Mary Summer, further showcasing his literary connections.
