Colonel The Honourable Aubrey Herbert was a multifaceted British soldier, diplomat, and intelligence officer known for his significant involvement in the political landscape of early 20th-century Albania. Born into an aristocratic family, he was the half-brother of George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who famously discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. Herbert's career was marked by his deep interest in Albanian independence, a cause to which he dedicated much of his efforts. He was notably offered the throne of Albania on two occasions, reflecting both his influence and the trust placed in him by Albanian nationalists during a tumultuous period in their history. From 1911 until his untimely death in 1923, Herbert served as a Conservative Member of Parliament, where he advocated for various issues, including foreign policy and national defense. His travels and experiences in Albania not only shaped his political views but also contributed to his legacy as a key figure in the region's struggle for autonomy. Despite his relatively short life, Herbert's contributions to diplomacy and his role in the Albanian independence movement left a lasting impact, marking him as a notable figure in British political history and international relations of the era.
