Annie Maria Barnes, known by her pen name Cousin Annie, was a prominent American journalist, editor, and author from South Carolina. Her literary journey began at a remarkably young age; by eleven, she had already penned an article for the Atlanta Constitution, and by fifteen, she was a regular correspondent for the same publication. This early start laid the foundation for her career in journalism and literature, during which she became a significant voice in the Southern United States. In 1887, she launched The Acanthus, a juvenile paper that catered to young readers and showcased her commitment to engaging the youth of her time. Barnes's literary contributions extended to novel writing, with her first work, "Some Lowly Lives and the Heights They Reached," published in 1887. Over the years, she continued to write novels, including notable titles such as "A Knight of Carolina," which was published as late as 1927. Her works often reflected the social issues of her era and aimed to inspire and uplift her readers. Through her journalism and fiction, Barnes carved out a niche for herself in the literary landscape of the 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy for youth and a voice for Southern women in literature.
