Years of Plenty

On his first day at Elfrey School, twelve-year-old Martin Leigh stands at the threshold of a world both thrilling and terrifying. A boarder in a rigid British public school, he must learn the unspoken laws of belonging quickly or face the particular cruelty reserved for those who don't fit in. Brown captures the exquisite torture of adolescence with sharp precision: the wrong tie, the strange customs, the agonizing awareness of being watched and found wanting. Martin's internal monologue pulses with the fear of embarrassment and the desperate hunger for acceptance that defines the schoolboy experience. Yet beneath the anxiety lies something else, a quiet resilience forming as Martin navigates friendships, hierarchies, and the small victories that make the years feel both endless and precious.
