Winter Evening Tales

These are quiet stories for quiet evenings. Amelia E. Barr's collection gathers tales of ordinary people grappling with the great tensions of Victorian life: ambition versus conscience, duty versus desire, the pull of the world against the whisper of the spirit. The opening story, "Cash," introduces David Lockerby of 19th-century Glasgow, a young man caught between his father's expectations in business and an inner calling to ministry. His struggle becomes a lens through which Barr examines the weight of family, the cost of choice, and the moral complexity that hides beneath respectable surfaces. Other tales trace similar contours of the heart, weaving love and loss into the fabric of everyday life. The prose has the gentle warmth of fireside reading, yet Barr's realism prevents sentimentality. These are stories about people who could be your neighbors, facing decisions that still resonate across the centuries.
