Winning His "W": A Story of Freshman Year at College

The terror of freshman year has never been more charmingly rendered. Peter John Schenck arrives at Winthrop College certain that upperclassmen lurk behind every corner, ready to pounce on any sign of weakness. His friends Will Phelps and Foster Bennett try to prepare him, but nothing could ready a nervous boy for the chaos of college social life. What follows is a series of comic misunderstandings, awkward encounters, and small victories that define the freshman experience. Tomlinson captures something timeless: the desperate need to belong, the fear of being exposed as a fraud, and the friends who see you through your most embarrassing moments. Published in 1904, this novel reads like a time capsule of collegiate rituals and anxieties that, remarkably, have not changed in over a century. For anyone who remembers the ache of being new, this warm comedy remembers what it feels like to win your first small victory far from home.
