Wild Wales

Wild Wales

Wild Wales

George Borrow

In 1854, after a family holiday in Llangollen, the eccentric Victorian gentleman writer George Borrow did something unusual: he wandered into the Welsh mountains alone, on foot, with little more than a walking stick and an inexhaustible curiosity about the people he met along the muddy paths. Wild Wales is the result: a travel book that reads less like a guidebook and more like a conversation overheard in a roadside inn. Borrow's genius lies in his encounters with farmers, shepherds, schoolmasters, and peddlers, the ordinary Welsh people whom Victorian travel writers typically overlooked. His ear for dialogue is extraordinary, capturing the rhythms of Welsh speech with Dickensian precision, and his humor is perpetually present: dry, generous, and sometimes absurd. The book weaves together landscape, folklore, history, and language into something that defies easy categorization. It is both a portrait of a nation and a self-portrait of an irrepressibly social man who cannot walk a mile without turning a stranger into a companion. For readers who want to encounter the real Wales, the Wales of remote valleys, old songs, and stubborn, warmhearted people, Borrow is an unlikely and irresistible guide.
