Why a National Literature Cannot Flourish in the United States of North America

Written in the mid-19th century, Joseph Rocchietti's 'Why a National Literature Cannot Flourish in the United States of North America' is a critical treatise examining the cultural identity and literary landscape of America. Rocchietti argues that the absence of a robust national literature is not due to the nation's youth but rather to prevailing attitudes that undervalue traditional literary forms. He contends that Americans, influenced by their European heritage, have the potential for artistic greatness, which can only be realized through a shift towards higher literary standards and a rejection of superficial works. This work explores the interplay of culture, identity, and literature in shaping American artistic expression.
