White Ashes

The Great Fire has reduced Manhattan to smoke and cinders, and Charles Wilkinson stands amid the ash, a young man with empty pockets and outsized ambitions. He's not here to mourn the city. He's here to climb. His step-uncle John M. Hurd sits on a fortune, and Charles has set his sights on both the man's approval and his daughter, Isabel. What follows is a sharp-eyed portrait of a young man navigating Gilded Age New York, where every dinner party is a negotiation and every favor carries a price. Kennedy writes with sardonic precision about the way wealth insulates itself from ruin, while Charles bumbles between genuine yearning and calculating ambition. The romance with Isabel adds real tension: is he pursuing her heart or her inheritance? The fire serves as both literal backdrop and metaphor for the consuming nature of desire. This is early 20th-century social fiction that understands how easily dreams turn to ash.
