Wheat and Huckleberries; Or, Dr. Northmore's Daughters

Two sisters, Esther and Kate Northmore, take charge of their family's wheat harvest in rural America, managing the celebration dinner while their doctor father tends to his pride and prejudice about farming. But this summer promises more than agricultural labor - a visit to New England awaits, where these western girls will encounter entirely different worlds of expectation and possibility. The narrative follows the sisters as they navigate familial duties, community bonds, and their own quietly defiant aspirations in an era when women's choices were narrow but not quite airtight. Vaile writes with sharp observational humor about the small dramas of farm life - the coordination of the harvest dinner, the arrival of relatives, the gentle tensions between duty and desire. What emerges is a portrait of young women finding their footing between tradition and the broader world calling them forward. For readers who cherish quiet stories of everyday courage, of women who want slightly more than the script offers them, this novel delivers both warmth and substance.
