Weaker Sex
The title drips with Victorian irony. In this sparkling 1899 comedy, Pinero takes aim at the very notion of feminine weakness by assembling a cast of women who are anything but. Mrs. Boyle-Chewton leads the charge for the Advancement of Women, recruiting the reluctant Lady Vivash to her cause, while their daughters Sylvia and Rhoda navigate the treacherous waters of love and social expectation. When Mr. Bargus, a gullible Member of Parliament, declares his adherence to the cause, the complications multiply, especially as the younger generation's romantic entanglements collide with their elders' ideological battles. Pinero's wit cuts both ways: he skewers the era's gender conventions while revealing the absurdity in all passion, whether political or romantic. The result is a comedy that feels genuinely progressive without sacrificing theatrical entertainment.
